Introduction to Skin Cancer Misdiagnosis
About Misdiagnosis of Skin Cancer
There are two main types of skin cancer. The first is non-melanoma and the second is malignant melanoma.
Both types of skin cancer are thought to be mainly caused by over-exposure to the sun or sunbeds and sunlamps.
Symptoms of both types of skin cancer will present themselves as changes to the skin such as discoloured patches, raised bumps, a new mole or changes to an existing mole. It is important to check moles particularly if you are prone to moles and / or have fair skin.
It is important to receive treatment for skin cancer as soon as possible and the longer the cancer is present, the worse the prognosis could be for the patient.
If your skin cancer is misdiagnosed and your condition worsens as a result, you may be able to make a personal injury compensation claim. For more information contact us on 08000 224 224.
Types of Skin Cancer
Information about different types of Skin Cancer
As mentioned above, there are two different types of skin cancer. Below you will find information about both types.
Non-Melanoma is one of the most common types of skin cancer seen in the UK and patients have a good prognosis if the cancer is detected and treated whilst still in the early stages.
This type of cancer can be subdivided into two main types : basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.
Malignant Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer because it can spread to other parts of the body (metastasis). The prognosis for the patient really depends on how early the Malignant Melanoma is identified; therefore it is crucial that the condition is correctly diagnosed as soon as possible. Delays in diagnosis can prove fatal.
The future health of patients with both types of skin cancers really does depend on how quickly the cancer is diagnosed and how quickly it is treated.
Delays by GP's or Hospital staff can make the difference as to whether a person makes a recovery from their cancer or not.
If you have been the victim of skin cancer misdiagnosis and your condition has worsened as a result, you may be able to make a personal injury claim for compensation. To find out more about how Thompsons Solicitors could help you, complete one of our online personal injury compensation claim forms.

Skin Cancer Misdiagnosis Claims for Compensation dealt with by Thompsons
At Thompsons Solicitors we have experienced personal injury lawyers who specialise in dealing with cancer misdiagnosis claims. Just a couple of examples of successful cases we have dealt with are below:
- Mr Y, an Immigration Officer, married with two young children, attended his GP on a number of occasions complaining about a mole on his abdomen. The GP wrongly diagnosed it as a benign lesion, inadequately removed it and failed to send it for histology. In fact; the lesion was a malignant melanoma which 13 months later had metastasised. Mr Y sadly died only 4 months after the diagnosis was made that he had terminal cancer secondary to the malignant mole. His widow claimed against the GP for negligent treatment. She claimed that adequate treatment i.e. obtaining the histology result, would have significantly increased her husband’s life expectancy. The compensation received has given the family some security for the future, with a significant sum being invested in a Trust for the children.
- Our clinical negligence team dealt with a claim for compensation for a lady who had been told that she was suffering from a malignant melanoma and underwent a wide excision and skin graft procedure as a result which resulted in scarring. It transpired that the suspicious mole was not malignant after all and as well as the unnecessary scarring she suffered anxiety and depression surrounding the prospect of the cancer recurring. She was awarded £25,000.
