Single Equality Bill backward step in the fight to eliminate discrimination
Thompsons Solicitors has warned that government proposals for a Single Equality Bill miss an important opportunity to make equality law "clear, far-reaching and effective". In its response to the consultation, the leading trade union law firm says that minor improvements to equality law contained in the planned Bill are overshadowed by proposals such as to remove specific equality duties on employers.
Rakesh Patel, author of Thompsons' response, says: "In some areas the proposals will lead to a backward step in the fight to eliminate discrimination." He set out minimum priorities in order to shape an effective Single Equality Act, including:
Stronger enforcement mechanisms
Strong public sector single equality duties across all grounds [of discrimination]
Extension of the public sector duty to the private sector
Permit positive action where required
A simpler definition of disability
