Widow receives compensation after her husband died of asbestos-related disease mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos
A Widow has received £115,000 in compensation after her husband died of asbestos-related disease mesothelioma. The woman, 51, from Wales, who does not wish to be named, received the damages after her electrician husband died just three weeks after being diagnosed with the disease.
Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos and can lie dormant for up to 40 years.
There is no cure for the disease and sufferers usually have just months to live following diagnosis.
Exposed to asbestos at Work
In this case the sufferer was exposed to asbestos in the late 1940s and early 1950s while working for Metro Cammell at their carriage works in Birmingham.
He was also exposed to asbestos during the 1960s while working for James Stott & Company, based in Oldham.
She said: “When he was diagnosed with mesothelioma it was a shock. We were told it was terminal and that he would have a matter of months to live but he only survived three weeks. He died just a few days after our Silver Anniversary.
“I did not start the claim until after he died. He would be really pleased to know I’ve now received compensation.”
Thompsons Solicitors acted on behalf of the client. Client representative Joanne Candlish said: “Mesothelioma is a devastating disease. Although compensation can never make up for the loss of a loved one it can fulfil a sense of justice for the family members and provide them with much needed financial assistance.
