Injured in a Factory Accident?
Introduction to Factory Injuries
If you work in a factory you will already know that they can be very dangerous places to be. It is paramount that health and safety regulations are implemented and followed in order to avoid accidents happening. The consequences of an accident in a factory can be very serious and can lead to workers suffering severe injuries.
If you are injured whilst working in a factory and the accident was someone else's fault, you may be entitled to make a personal injury claim for compensation. To discuss the possibility of making a claim with no obligation, call us on 08000 224 224 or complete one of our online personal injury compensation claim forms.
Common Factory Accidents
Typical Injuries sustained in Factories
Below you will find information about some of the most common types of accidents and injuries sustained in factories. If the type of injury you have sustained is not mentioned below, please call us on 08000 224 224 and we will let you know if we can help.
Dangerous Machinery
In a factory there are often a number of machines which could potentially cause serious injuries. Anyone operating machinery should be fully trained on how to do so correctly and safely and the machinery should be well-maintained. Unguarded machinery and untrained operators account for a high percentage of accidents involving machinery in factories. Common injuries sustained from this type of accident include burns, lacerations and amputations.
Lifting Heavy Objects
Manufacturing goods in a factory environment often requires manual handling of components or the finished product. As far as is possible, lifting of heavy objects should be avoided and equipment should be provided to limit the amount of manual handling necessary. If the lifting of heavy objects cannot be totally avoided, staff should be provided with training on how to lift safely. Manual handling injuries often result in back injuries, neck and shoulder injuries, arm injuries or foot injuries.
Forklift Truck Accidents
Specialist training is required for anyone who operates a forklift truck and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) should also be provided. Fork lift trucks should be inspected regularly and kept well maintained. There should also be separation of vehicular and pedestrian routes with protective barriers being erected if appropriate. Injuries caused by forklift trucks can vary in severity from crush injuries causing broken bones to fatalities.
Slips, Trips and Falls
In a manufacturing environment, it is not uncommon for spillages to occur particularly if food processing is involved. There should be a system for cleaning in place in a factory where the floor is regularly inspected and cleaned of any spillages or other slipping and tripping hazards. Common causes of slips in factories include water on the floor and oil on the floor.
Industrial Diseases
Depending on what is being manufactured in the factory, there may also be a risk of industrial diseases. Dust, fumes, chemicals and other dangerous substances can all be present in factories and can contribute to industrial diseases. Some of the most common industrial disease cases we help with at Thompsons Solicitors include industrial deafness, occupational dermatitis, hand arm vibration syndrome ( including vibration white finger), occupational asthma, latex allergies and asbestos related illnesses.
If you have been injured whilst working in a factory or have developed an industrial illness due to your working conditions, you may be entitled to make a personal injury compensation claim. To discuss how Thompsons Solicitors may be able to help you on a cost-free basis, call us on 08000 224 224 or complete one of our online personal injury compensation claim forms.
The Six Pack Regulations
Regulations to Protect Factory Workers
All employers have a duty to protect their staff and visitors from the risk of injury and factory workers are no exception. The safety of all workers including factory workers is protected by a group of six major health and safety regulations known as the "Six Pack". These six regulations brought in, in 1992 replaced the Factories Act 1961 and the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
The six pack is made up of The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations, The Manual Handling Operations Regulations, The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations, The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations, The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations and The Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations.
The six regulations are very detailed and not all of them will routinely apply to factory workers. Some main parts of the regulations to affect factory workers include Manual Handling which we have already mentioned above, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) which should be provided in all cases where the risk of injury or illness cannot be completely eliminated and COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) which details how workers should be protected from harmful substances in the workplace through elimination, training and PPE.
If you have suffered an injury whilst working in a factory which was caused by the negligence of someone else, even if the person at fault was a colleague, you may be able to make a personal injury compensation claim.
