Introduction to Injury Claims for Road Workers
About Injured Road Workers and Compensation
Being a road worker can be a very dangerous profession. Not only are road workers exposed to hazards which are commonplace in many other workplaces such as lifting heavy items or tripping over stray objects but they also face a very real risk of being hit by a vehicle while they are working.
In an ideal world, any roads being worked on would be closed fully to protect the safety of the workers but on Britain’s road network this is not an option and the best that can be done is to close certain lanes and reduce the speed limit.
If you or someone you know has been injured while working on the roads and the accident was someone else’s fault, you may be able to make a personal injury claim for compensation. For more information about how we may be able to help on a cost-free basis, call us on 08000 224 224 or complete one of our online personal injury compensation claim forms.

Vibration White Finger / Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome
Road workers frequently have to use vibrating tools such as jackhammers, vibrating rollers and wacker plates. It is very important for workers using these type of tools to have adequate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) issued to them and for there to be a job rotation system in place to ensure adequate breaks from the vibrating machinery.
Prolonged use of vibrating machinery can lead to Vibration White Finger (VWF) or Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) as it is also known.
Many of the tools and machinery used by road workers are extremely noisy, as is the traffic which passes them for hours each day. Ear defenders are an essential item of PPE for anyone working in a noisy environment including road workers. Prolonged exposure to loud noise can lead to occupational deafness.
If you suspect that you have developed deafness as a result of your working environment, contact your GP who should help you to arrange the necessary tests.

Whilst working on the road, either on foot or inside a work vehicle, road workers face the risk of being hit by another motorist.
Injuries from road accidents can vary in severity tremendously from whiplash and lacerations to broken bones and tragically some amputations, brain injuries and fatalities.
High-visibility clothing is essential for road workers, as is a good system of separating road workers from the traffic and keeping the speed limits low.
A Road Worker’s job often involves heavy manual labour and training should be provided on how to lift heavy objects safely. The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (amended in 2002) are designed to protect all employees including Road Workers from injuries caused by Manual Handling at work.
Road workers are also at risk from heavy objects falling onto them. Thompsons Solicitors dealt with one particular personal injury claim for a road worker who suffered paraplegia after a stack of road signs fell onto him. His claim settled for over £2m.
It is not unusual for road workers to have to work at height. This could be to carry out work on bridges, lighting or signage above the roads, often in cherry pickers or scissor lifts.
If the vehicle tips or collapses or is hit by another vehicle the road worker could fall resulting in serious injuries. Falls from vehicles of this nature can also occur if insufficient training has taken place and the vehicles or their safety features are not used correctly.
The Work at Height Regulations 2005 (amended in 2007) are intended to protect everyone who has to work at height and you can read more about this by visiting our Falls from Height at Work Page.
Road workers frequently have to use tarmac or concrete to lay new road or pavement surfaces. Tarmac is heated to a high temperature before being used and can cause nasty burns. Concrete, although not hot, contains chemicals which can cause chemical burns if contact with the skin occurs.
Appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as gloves, overalls, boots and goggles are essential when working with these products.
