Manual Handling Injury
Robert's client in this case was a man who injured his back at work while lifting and carrying a large drum. The drums weighed in excess of 50lb and needed to be carried up a flight of stairs to access another level.
The job of carrying the drums was really a two-person job but it was common practice for one person to move the drums alone.
On the day of his accident the man felt a pop in his back while lifting the drum and his back soon became stiff and very painful. In addition to being allowed to carry the drum alone, the man had not received any lifting and handling training from his employer.
Robert was successful in recovering a substantial sum in compensation for the injured man.
Industrial Deafness Claim
In this case Robert's client was a maintenance engineer who worked in an area where printing presses were running all day long. He had worked for the same employer for many years and was only provided with ear defenders in the last few years before he started suffering from hearing problems when the damage had already been done.
Hearing tests showed that he had suffered substantial hearing loss in both ears meaning that he found it difficult to follow conversations when there was background noise even if the person speaking was standing directly in front of him. He also had to listen to television and radio with the volume turned up high.
Robert recovered £10,000 industrial disease compensation for this man.
