Prison Officer Assaulted at Work secures £47,500 compensation
Our client in this case was Mr Brown; a prison officer who was assaulted at work by an inmate. The inmate was known to be violent and disruptive but despite this, another prison officer opened the inmate's door without consulting or warning Mr Brown which would have been the correct procedure. The inmate charged at Mr Brown who tried his best to restrain him but injured his thumb in the process. Mr Brown sustained an avulsion (tearing) fracture to his thumb and scar tissue developed which restricted the movement of his thumb. He was downgraded at work because of his permanent restriction and lost earnings as a result. We recovered £47,500 compensation for him. An extract from Mr Brown's thank you letter read:
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you very much for your invaluable assistance with regard to my personal injury claim against the Prison Service. I am under no illusion that it was through your meticulous hard work in processing the copious amount of evidence that I provided, which finally resulted in a settlement that I feel is acceptable prior to attending court.
I always knew that I had been wronged in the workplace but was also aware that taking on an organisation like the Prison Service to task can be daunting. Your calm manner and knowledge of legal matters helped to reassure me during some very stressful and worrying times. I am also thankful of how you always had time to talk over any issues or concerns I had, which helped tremendously.
£40,000 compensation for Back Injury
Janet Miler who suffered a back injury in an accident at work commented:
"I have today received the cheque for £40,000. May I please take this opportunity to say thank you very much for all your help during this most trying of times. I know that sometimes I have been a nuisance and weepy but on all occasions you have been very supportive and helpful. For that I will always be very grateful. I can now start to get on with the rest of my life and make plans for my future. We spoke about the possibility of publicity and you have my permission to use my details if you so require. Once again, many thanks".
Injury to Lower Back from Accident at Work results in £32,000 compensation
Mr Wright was employed as a machine minder and had received only one week of training before being asked to operate a particular machine. As Mr Wright attempted to step down from the machine onto the floor, he stepped onto a bundle of pipes, causing him to trip and fall. He injured his lower back in the accident and recovered £32,000 accident compensation with the help of Thompsons Solicitors. His thank you letter said "It is with great pleasure that I write to thank you for all your hard work in dealing with my case, I would like to say that throughout the whole time you have been very very kind, honest, polite and professional when discussing the case with me."
Accident at Work leads to back injury and £20,000 compensation
Ms Bolton was at work at the time of her accident and was trying to lift a patient from the shower room to his hospital bed with a colleague's help. The two members of staff were using a hoist; however the hoist stopped working and while Ms Bolton was trying to fix the hoist and keep the patient safe at the same time, she injured her back.
Ms Bolton was awarded £20,000 with the help of her Trade Union, Unison and Thompsons' specialist personal injury solicitors. Her thank you letter read "Many many thanks for all your efforts on my behalf. I also extend my thanks to Unison who supported me".
£18,000 compensation for Back Injury and Head Injury sustained at Work
Mr Lomax was at work when he tried to rise from his armless chair which had wheels on the bottom. As he was doing this, the chair shot from beneath him and he fell to the floor, sustaining injuries to his back, shoulder and head. The chair was not suitable for the working environment the client was in, particularly combined with the vinyl floor which was often subject to spillages and not regularly cleaned. With help from his trade union, Amicus and Thompsons' specialist personal injury solicitors, Mr Lomax was awarded £18,000.
His thank you letter read "I cannot thank you enough for the skilful manner in which you have handled my case, I know it could not have been easy or straight forward and realise that you must have put in a great deal of thought, negotiating skill and effort in order to reach this result. I shall always be grateful to yourself and of course, Amicus, for the support given to me."
Compensation recovered from another firm of Solicitors
Mr A Humphrey was devastated when a firm of Solicitors he instructed, failed to obtain any compensation for him after he suffered a back injury at work. The Solicitors he appointed allowed the limitation period to expire without warning Mr Humphrey of this, leaving him unable to claim any damages from his employer.
He then approached Thompsons Solicitors to assist him and we were successful in obtaining £16,500 compensation from the original solicitors who had acted negligently while dealing with Mr Humphrey's claim. This type of claim is called professional negligence.
An extract from Mr Humphrey's letter said:
"Thank you for your letter dated 27th January 2005 and the enclosed cheque for £16,500 in settlement for the above claim.
I would just like you to know that I was very impressed with the service offered by your firm, I was kept well informed at all levels throughout the claim process. I received a first class service which I could not fault in any way and so thank you all very much".

Mr Fitzpatrick-Odahemier was employed as a residential social worker and worked in a care home for children. He had never received any lifting and handling training and on the day of his accident was lifting a fish tank when he badly injured his back.
It was found that he had suffered a prolapse and also suffered from ongoing debilitating symptoms leading him to retire on the grounds of ill health.
Thompsons helped Mr Fitzpatrick-Odahemier to obtain £15,735 and his thank you letter read "Both myself and my partner would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude and sincere thanks to you personally for the way you have dealt with this case from the outset. Your hard work, professionalism and perseverance and the way you have supported our concerns with this case throughout has, I'm sure helped to secure this successful outcome".

Mr Edmonson was working as an Industrial Bricklayer on a building site at the time of his accident. He was asked to stand at the bottom of a ladder and support it whilst two of his colleagues climbed the ladder to fix some tarpaulin which had came loose from a roof and was flapping in the wind.
As Mr Edmonson was doing this, a concrete block which was holding the tarpaulin in place became loose and fell onto Mr Edmonson's head.
He suffered from a fractured skull and loss of memory as well as headaches and dizziness. Thompsons' specialist personal injury solicitors recovered £12,000 compensation for him (the figure was less than would be normally expected as Mr Edmonson had chosen not to wear a hard hat at the time of his accident).
His thank you letter read "I would like to thank you for all the hard work you have done, also help and advice that you and your company has given me, in making a successful settlement for me in my claim for compensation. I am very pleased with the service I have received. Thank you once again".

He stacked two pallets on top of one another and then proceeded to lift them from the back of the truck. The bottom pallet collapsed and one of the pallets fell onto Mr Gray, knocking him to the ground.

His thank you letter read "May I take this opportunity to thank you personally for your attention to the case and Thompsons in general for acting on my behalf. I have made known to my colleagues, the conduct of this case and the assistance available through Thompsons as a benefit of UNISON membership.
