Introduction to Hip Replacements
About Hip Replacement Surgery
Hip Replacement surgery can be required as a result of congenital abnormalities, arthritis, wear and tear on the hip joint over time or because of an injury caused to the hip joint such as a broken hip from a fall.
Surgery on a damaged hip can greatly improve a patient's quality of life and mobility. Errors made during surgery or problems with a hip implant; however can have a devastating effect and if you have suffered an injury as a result of a hip operation, you may be able to make a personal injury claim for compensation.

Types of Hip Surgery
Hip Resurfacing, Hip Replacement and Hip Revision
Hip Resurfacing
If it is feasible a surgeon would normally opt for a hip resurfacing operation (or arthroplasty as it is also known) before considering a full hip replacement operation. Hip resurfacing involves replacing diseased or damaged parts of the hip joint with metal implants. Less bone is removed in a hip resurfacing operation than in a total hip replacement which improves the chances of the operation succeeding a second time if needed in the future and also leaves open the option of a total hip replacement operation at a later date if required.
Total Hip Replacement
A total hip replacement operation can involve one or both hips being replaced. The bones which make up the ball and socket of the hip joint are removed and replaced with parts made of metal, plastic or ceramic.
Hip Revision Surgery
The term 'Hip Revision Surgery' is used to describe an operation where a patient needs to have their hip replacement joint removed and replaced. Replacement hip joints are designed to last between 10-20 years but sometimes need replacing before this for various reasons.
If you have suffered an injury as the result of a hip resurfacing operation, hip replacement operation or hip revision operation you may be entitled to make a medical negligence claim for compensation. Errors made during Hip Surgery
Problems with hip surgery which can lead to compensation
There are many different circumstances which can lead to a personal injury compensation claim after a hip operation. A few examples are listed below; however, if your individual circumstances are not mentioned we may still be able to help.
To discuss your claim in more detail, call us on 08000 224 224 or complete one of our online personal injury compensation claim forms.
Defective Hip Replacements
If a defective or faulty hip implant is used it is unlikely to last as long as usual. More surgery is likely to be required to remove and replace the defective or broken implant. In severe cases, if a hip revision surgery is not possible or is unsuccessful, the patient could be left wheelchair bound.
You can read more about one particular brand of hip implants recalled over safety concerns on our page called DePuy Hips. Our specialist Clinical Negligence Team have also written a factsheet about defective hip joints which can be read by visiting our page entitled 'Defective Hip Replacements'.
Securing Hip Implant
If the hip implant is not fitted properly during the original surgery or if there is a problem with the cement used, the implant could work loose much sooner than the normal life expectancy of 10-20 years.
Wrong sized Hip Implant
Hip implants are made in various different sizes and it is important that the correct sized implant is used. An implant of the wrong size can lead to ongoing pain, discomfort and mobility problems.
Other Surgical Errors
As with all operations, patients having hip replacement surgeries can be at risk of various surgical errors. Some examples of cases Thompsons' specialist clinical negligence team have dealt with for hip replacement surgical errors have involved a surgical pin being left inside a patient's hip and another case of a major nerve being damaged during surgery and although the damage was noticed, it was not repaired, leaving the patient with severely impaired mobility.

We also successfully handled a hip operation compensation claim for a lady who had to have three separate surgeries instead of one due to errors made.
The lady suffered from arthritis in her knee and hip which made the operation necessary and it was decided that she would have a hip resurfacing procedure rather than a hip replacement operation.
Unfortunately, errors made by the surgeon in the first two surgeries meant that the prosthesis loosened both times. She was in pain and couldn’t walk unaided. The third surgery was a conventional hip replacement and did improve her condition although she does now have an increased risk of needing revision surgery in the future.
Thompsons' specialist clinical negligence solicitors recovered a substantial amount of compensation for this lady which took into account her pain and suffering and her lost earnings.
