Introduction to Weil's Disease or Leptospirosis

About Weil's Disease and Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection caused by bacteria called leptospira.  Leptospirosis which infects the liver, kidneys and heart is more commonly known as Weil's Disease and the reason for this is that the first reported case of the infection was recorded by a man called Adolf Weil back in 1886.

Leptospirosis is passed to humans through the urine of infected animals and the most common animals known to carry the bacteria are cows, pigs, horses, sheep, dogs, bats, rats and mice.

Most people make a good recovery from leptospirosis; however, in extreme cases where treatment is not sought, it can be fatal.

If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with Weil's Disease or Leptospirosis, a claim for compensation may be possible.  To discuss your case in more detail and find out if we can help, call us on 08000 224 224 or complete one of our online personal injury compensation claim forms.

People at risk of developing Weil's Disease

How is Leptospirosis contracted?

Weil's Disease and leptospirosis in the UK are rare and tend to be more common in tropical countries and those with poor sanitation.  In the UK, Leptospirosis and Weil's Disease are only generally a risk to people who:

  • work with animals, such as farmers, vets and abattoir workers
  • work in the sewerage system
  • spend time in UK rivers; participating in water sports for example or fishing

Leptospirosis and Weil's Disease are most commonly contracted by infected water coming into contact with a person's eyes, nose, mouth or broken skin.  It can also be caused by drinking infected water and less commonly by coming into contact with an infected animal's blood.

If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with Leptospirosis or Weil's Disease a personal injury compensation claim may be possible.  To discuss your individual case with no obligation to instruct us, call on 08000 224 224 or complete one of our online personal injury compensation claim forms.

Symptoms of Weil's Disease and Leptospirosis

Mild Leptospirosis and Severe Leptospirosis

The symptoms of mild leptospirosis are very similar to flu and include fever, headaches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle pain and a sore throat.  A course of oral antibiotics will normally clear up mild leptospirosis after a week or so.

A small number of people who suffer from mild leptospirosis go on to develop severe leptospirosis where the bacterium infects the liver, kidney, heart, brain or lungs.  Sufferers of severe leptospirosis and Weil's disease will require treatment in hospital.  IV antibiotics will normally be administered and any organ damage treated separately.

Importance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at work

Protection from Leptospirosis and Weil's Disease

For workers at risk of coming into contact with water or soil infected with animal urine, PPE is essential to prevent contracting Leptospirosis and Weil's Disease.

Waterproof clothing including waterproof boots and gloves should be provide by the employer as well as goggles and a mask.  To read more about PPE, visit our PPE - Personal Protective Equipment page.

It is also sensible to cover any open wounds with dressings to prevent the wound becoming infected with any type of bacteria including leptospira.
