Introduction to Concussion Injuries
About Concussion Injuries
Concussion, or mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) as it is also known, is the most common and least serious type of traumatic brain injury. A concussion injury usually occurs following a blow or jolt to the head. The impact shakes the brain inside the skull and temporarily disrupts normal brain function. Concussion may result in loss of consciousness and comes in both mild and more severe forms. Concussion is not usually a life threatening injury but it can cause both short and long term problems. Symptoms of concussion include:
Loss of consciousness
Headaches
Memory loss
Confusion
Tiredness
Anxiety
Low mood
Nausea or vomiting
Blurred vision
Balance problems or dizziness
Sensitivity to light or noise
Concentration problems
Irritability
Epilepsy
Sensory Impairment such as loss of taste and smell
Alteration in characteristics
Sexual disinterest and disfunction
If you have suffered a concussion as a result of someone else’s negligence, you may be able to make a personal injury compensation claim. Treatment for Concussion Injuries
Action to take following a Concussion Injury
Mild concussion is generally treated with rest as there is not an immediate cure. Painkillers may be prescribed to relieve symptoms, but as time passes the symptoms will naturally ease. In more serious cases it may be necessary to carry out x-rays and brain scans as there is a chance that the impact may have caused a bleed within the skull. If this is not treated the pressure of the bleed may cause permanent damage to the brain, and in some cases it may even be fatal.
After sustaining a concussion injury it is important to wait until all symptoms have completely gone before returning to normal activities. If you reinjure your brain during the healing time, it will take even more time to completely heal. Each time a concussion injury is sustained, it does additional damage. Repeated head injuries can lead to swelling, and sometimes people develop long-term disabilities, or even die as a result.
Prolonged periods of concussion can be of concern and heighten a risk of epilepsy developing. The risk of epilepsy developing after concussion does generally diminish however quite often over a period of 5 years from the date of the accident. It is important to seek medical advice immediately if any untoward signs begin to occur after a concussion such as memory disturbance, any form of fit or perhaps even sensory impairment such as a sense of smelling burning material or acid when it is clear that this is not occurring in reality.
If you have sustained a concussion injury due to someone else's negligence you may be entitled to make a compensation claim. For more information contact us on 08000 224 224.
Preventing a Concussion Injury
Steps to take to minimise a Concussion Injury
Concussion injuries can be caused in many different ways, such as from an accident at work, a road accident, an accident in a public place, a sports accident or an assault / attack. Some accidents cannot be prevented, but steps can be taken to prevent or minimise the extent of a concussion.
Headwear
By wearing appropriate headwear such as helmets and hard hats the risk of a concussion will be reduced by approximately 85%.
Motorcyclists by law must wear a helmet, but in spite of various campaigns and strong encouragement it is advised but not compulsory for cyclists to do the same.
Safety helmets are recommended and are becoming a more popular choice in sports such as horse riding, hockey, skateboarding and canoeing. Although helmets are not mandatory in skiing and snowboarding, there are now an increasing number of hills that skiers cannot go on unless a helmet is worn. In sports such as gymnastics padded and appropriate surfaces are also beneficial.
Protective headwear is also important in environments such as building and construction sites, and for factory workers and certain members of the armed forces. Your employer should supply you with the correct PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) headwear to keep you safe in your working environment.
Seatbelts
When driving or travelling in a car the law requires both the driver and passengers, regardless of age to wear a seatbelt. Baby seats and booster seats should be used for younger children. When using public transport seatbelts must also be worn if one is fitted.
Seatbelts, safety bars, chains and restraints should also be used when fitted on amusement park rides.
At Night
At night, drivers and motorcyclists must use their headlights to see and to be seen. When out after dusk it is important to wear clothing that stands out, light and reflective clothing will alert drivers of your presence and reduce the risk of an accident.
If you have been involved in an accident which was not your fault and have developed a concussion injury you may be able to make a personal injury claim for damages.
