About Dangerous Livestock Compensation Claims
Although livestock animals are considered to be domesticated they can still cause injuries to people working with them and to members of the public who come into contact with them.
Cattle in particular can cause serious injuries and even fatal injuries due to their size and weight.
If you have been injured by dangerous livestock due to someone else's negligence you may be able to make a personal injury compensation claim. Attacked by a Cow or Bull
Injuries caused by Cows Charging
One of the most common types of incidents we hear about involving injuries caused by cattle are cases where a cow has charged and attacked a member of the public.
In normal circumstances cattle are docile, gentle animals but they do have minds of their own and can decide to attack if they feel threatened in any way.
In the UK it is normal for some public footpaths to run through fields where farmers have permission to keep cattle. For safety reasons farmers should consider moving cows to another area away from the public at calving time as they become very protective of their young and can take exception to people coming too close to them.
Farmers should also assess whether warning signs are needed in the area and depending on each animal's temperament whether it is safe for them to be in the area even when calves aren't present.
Cows can feel threatened by members of the public who walk dogs close to them and if you must walk a dog through a field containing cows you should walk as close to the fence as you can and keep your dog on a lead.
If you are charged by a cow your injuries can be very serious and some of the most common injuries we hear of are broken bones, punctured lungs and head injuries. Victims of an attack by cattle are sometimes knocked unconscious and medical attention is almost always required.
If you have been attacked by a cow you may be entitled to make an accident compensation claim. To find out if Thompsons Solicitors can help you call us on 08000 224 224.
Other Injuries caused by Dangerous Livestock
More about Injuries caused by Livestock
There are many other different injuries which can be caused by livestock in addition to the attacks mentioned above.
Heavy animals such as cows can cause nasty injuries if they step onto a person's foot by accident or crush them against a wall in a shed for example. If you are working with heavy livestock your employer should have provided you with appropriate training and suitable PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) to wear to protect you from an injury on a farm.
Visitors to farms and in particular children visiting farms should be protected from livestock at all times. Pregnant women should also avoid contact with sheep during lambing season as harm could be caused to both the pregnant women and her unborn child due to chlamydiosis (enzootic abortion of ewes - EAE), toxoplasmosis, listeriosis and Q fever.
Any animal kept as livestock which escapes from its enclosure poses a danger to the public, particularly to motorists if the animal strays onto the road. Escaped livestock such as cows, sheep and pigs have been known to cause road traffic accidents.
If you have been involved in an accident with an animal which has caused you an injury you may be entitled to make a personal injury claim for compensation.
