Introduction to Personal Injury Claims for Bike Couriers

About Compensation Claims for Bike Couriers

Bike Couriers are often a popular choice when urgent delivery of documents, letters or parcels is needed.  Bike couriers can offer delivery within a matter of hours and by using cycles and motorcycles can often avoid traffic jams which would hold up other forms of transport such as vans and lorries.

Cycling or riding a motorcycle on the UK's busy roads can be dangerous; however and cyclists and motorcyclists face the risk of serious injury if they are involved in an accident as they have little protection particularly if they are involved in a collision with a motor vehicle.

If you have been injured whilst working as a bike courier and the accident was someone else's fault, you may be able to make a personal injury compensation claim.  For more information, call us on 08000 224 224 or complete one of our online personal injury compensation claim forms.

Dangers faced by Bike Messengers

Common Accidents involving Bike Couriers

Below you will find details of some of the most common accidents bike couriers are involved in.  If your specific accident-type is not mentioned below, we may still be able to help.  Call us on 08000 224 224 to discuss your individual circumstances in more detail without any obligation to instruct us.

Road Traffic Collision

One of the most common causes of injury to bike couriers is a collision with another vehicle on the road.  Cyclists and motorcyclists have little protection against this type of accident and even a minor collision can result in serious injuries including head injuries, brain injuries, crush injuries, broken bones, amputations and fatalities.

One of the main causes of collisions involving cycles and motorcycles is that they are not seen by other motorists who fail to check the cycle lane before turning left for example or fail to notice the smaller vehicles before pulling out of a junction into their path or turning right across an oncoming lane of traffic.

Dangerous Road Surfaces

Bike couriers using cycles or motorcycles both face the danger of hazards caused by dangerous road surfaces.  Potholes are probably the biggest problem as well as raised or broken drain covers in the road, an excess of grit, gravel or stone chippings and spillages such as oil or a build-up of water.

In a lot of cases involving dangerous road surfaces, the local authority or Highways Agency can be held responsible as they have a responsibility to keep the roads in a safe condition.  Cases involving spillages can be more difficult as the person or organisation which caused the spillage would have to be identified.

Lifting and Handling

Due to the limited storage space available on a cycle or motorcycle, a bike courier should never be carrying a huge or heavy load.  If the parcel is too heavy or too large to be safely carried by the bike courier, it could cause an accident.

A bike courier's employer should monitor the size and weight of the parcels their couriers are collecting and delivering and organise training on how to lift heavy objects safely.  Back injuries are common after a lifting and handling accident.

Trips, Slips and Falls

As with all other workers, bike couriers can be injured after slipping, tripping or falling.  This could be out in a public place, at their own place of employment or at a customer's property.

Common causes of slips, trips and falls outdoors include potholes and damaged paving stones whereas common causes of slips, trips and falls inside are more likely to be spillages, trailing wires, untidy walkways or a damaged floor covering.

Faulty Equipment

If a bike courier is provided with a cycle or motorcycle to use by their employer, the vehicle should be in good working order and well-maintained.  The bike should be inspected and serviced regularly and any identified faults repaired immediately.

Bike couriers should also be provided with appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as a properly fitting safety helmet.

If you have been involved in an accident whilst working as a bike courier, we may be able to help you make a personal injury claim on a cost-free basis.  To discuss your case in more detail, with no obligation, call us on 08000 224 224 or complete one of our online personal injury compensation claim forms.
