Manual Handling Injury
Accident involving a Fork Lift Truck (FLT)
Exposure to Hazardous Substances
There are many different causes of slips, trips and falls in warehouses. Poorly discarded strapping or packaging is a common cause, as are spillages of water, oil or other liquids. It is very important for a warehouse floor to be kept free of slipping and tripping hazards. Slips and trips in warehouses often lead to broken bones and nasty lacerations.
In a warehouse environment, goods are often stacked high on pallets or shelving and sometimes on an upper floor. If goods are not stacked correctly or are stacked too high there is a chance that objects could fall and can land on workers below.
Even a small object can cause a serious injury if it falls from a height and lands on a person below. Common injuries from this type of accident are head injuries
It is not uncommon for warehouse workers to have to work above floor level. Warehouse workers frequently have to stack goods on high shelving or remove goods from high places which are being taken out of the warehouse. In some warehouses ladders are used and in others mechanical pickers may be used. There may even be elevated walkways or flooring in some warehouses.
The Work at Height Regulations 2005 (amended in 2007) are intended to protect everyone who has to work at height and as a main priority state that employers should avoid asking their employees to work at heights wherever possible.
If working at heights is absolutely essential, equipment should be used which prevents falls from heights. As a last resort, if the risk of falling from a height cannot be completely eliminated, equipment should be provided which minimises the distance the person is at risk of falling and reduces the risk of serious injury. Employers should also make sure that their employees are properly trained for working at height.
Falls from height can vary in severity from broken bones to spinal injuries, brain injuries and fatalities.
Lifting and moving heavy goods is commonplace in a warehouse environment.
The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (amended in 2002) are designed to protect employees from injuries caused by Manual Handling at work and state that employers should eliminate any manual handling which is not absolutely necessary, carry out a risk assessment of all of the manual handling which cannot be eliminated and which may cause an injury and finally to try to reduce the risk of injury from all essential manual handling as much as possible.
Common injuries suffered as a result of lifting heavy goods include back injuries, arm injuries and foot injuries.
Accident involving a Fork Lift Truck (FLT)
Fork Lift Trucks can be very useful pieces of equipment to warehouse staff as they can eliminate some or all of the manual handling involved in the job. They are; however, very dangerous pieces of equipment and accidents involving fork-lift trucks often cause serious life-changing injuries and fatalities.
To drive a fork lift truck in the UK a person is obliged by Law to undergo the correct training and workplaces using fork lift trucks should also supply the operators with the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and should inspect and maintain the fork lift trucks to a safe condition. Employers also have a duty under s 17 of the Workplace ( Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 to ensure that pedestrians and vehicles can circulate in a safe manner, therefore they should assess the working environment and try to separate the areas in which fork lift trucks operate from the areas where pedestrians are likely to be.
Exposure to Hazardous Substances
At Thompsons Solicitors we have dealt with many personal injury claims for warehouse workers who have suffered an injury or illness after being exposed to hazardous substances in the workplace.
The dangerous substance could be a product being stored at the warehouse, some kind of chemical used for cleaning in the warehouse or a product used in the construction of the warehouse itself such as asbestos.
Personal Protective Equipment for Warehouse Staff
PPE in a Warehouse
As mentioned in the sections above, if the risk from an activity at work cannot be completely eliminated, as a last resort Personal Protective Equipment or PPE as it is also known should be provided to workers. PPE is designed to prevent, or at the very least, minimise any injuries suffered in an accident.
Common PPE required by Warehouse Workers includes hard hats, protective boots, gloves, high-vis jackets and overalls.
