Imuran®

What is Imuran®?

Imuran is an immunosuppressive drug which can be prescribed in tablet form or given as an injection. It is used to suppress the immune system and prevent the body from rejecting a transplanted organ.

It is also used to treat various other conditions including severe rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune chronic hepatitis, ulcerative colitis, crohn’s disease and many others.

Imuran® contains the active ingredient, azathioprine, which is a carcinogen (promotes cancer) and causes skin sensitisation.

Injured by Imuran®?

In 2003, a group of women formally employed by the manufacturers of Imuran®, GlaxoSmithKline, alleged that they had been injured whilst working on the production line at the plant in Dartford, Kent.

Each woman had been employed at the plant for ten years or more during the 1980’s and had each suffered cancer, miscarriages or babies born with birth defects. They stated that their health problems had occurred as a result of being exposed to large amounts of dust from the Imuran® tablets on the production line and the Health and Safety Executive became involved.
